What is a Gel & Lacquer Duo?

A Gel & Lacquer Duo is two bottles of the same shade: one SNS Pro Healthy GelStar gel polish and one SNS Nail Lacquer, 0.5 oz (15 ml) each. The gel cures under a UV/LED lamp and stays put until you soak it off. The lacquer air-dries and comes off with ordinary remover. You buy them together because they were made together, from one color mix, so the color on your hands and the color on your toes are the same color and not a close guess.

Why do we sell the gel and the lacquer as a pair?

Because matching a gel to a lacquer across two brands does not work. Pigment loads differ, the base resins shift the tone, and a navy from one bottle is a different navy under a lamp. We make both halves of the duo from the same color mix, then split it between the gel base and the lacquer base, so the pair matches by construction rather than by eye.

In a salon that solves a specific problem. The gel manicure on the hands and the lacquer pedicure on the toes come out of the same shade, and the client leaves with one color, not two. At home it solves a quieter one. You keep the lacquer bottle for touch-ups and toes, and the gel bottle for the set that has to last.

The 816 shades, book by book

All 816 shades come from the six SNS Pro books: 144 each in the Blue, Pink, Beige and Burgundy books, 120 each in the Green and Yellow Green books. The books are named for the color of the cover, not for the shades inside, so the Blue Book holds hot pinks and nudes just as it holds navy. Every shade is numbered from #001 inside its book, and that number is the same code you see on the dip powder jar and on the swatch card at the salon. The Green and Yellow Green books are the ones whose dip powder needs no activator; the gel and lacquer pair is the same product in every book.

Each listing carries the code, a plain-English color word, and the book, so Gel & Lacquer Duo #096 Hot Pink, Blue Book reads the way a tech would say it out loud. The second photo on every listing is the shade on a nail tip, taken from the book's swatch page.

Which book should you start with?

The book names say nothing about what is inside, so we counted. The table is our read of the 816 swatches, grouped by color family and rounded to the shade; a mauve that leans pink lands in pinks, and every glitter is counted in its family as well as in the glitter column.

Read it the way a salon would. The Pink Book is the red book, 45 reds and corals and no glitter, so it covers the classic pedicure wall. The Beige Book carries the most pinks and nudes and is the safest first book for a shop that sells mostly neutrals. The Burgundy Book has the deepest bench of blues, teals and dark shades. The Blue Book is the broadest single book, and the one to start with if you want one of everything. The Green and Yellow Green books run lighter and brighter: the most greens of any book, the fewest darks, and Yellow Green has no glitter at all.

Gel polish and nail lacquer: what each half is for

Both bottles are the same color. They are not the same product, and the table is the short version of when each one earns its place.

If you only want one half, the gel is sold on its own under SNS Gel Only. The lacquer in these shades is not sold separately; it only ships inside the duo.

How do you apply GelStar gel polish?

The same way as any soak-off gel, and the base and top coat matter as much as the color. Prep the nail, push back the cuticle, and buff the shine off. Apply a thin coat of gel base and cure it. Apply the color in two thin coats, curing after each; thin coats cure through, thick ones do not. Finish with a gel top coat and a final cure, then wipe the tacky layer. The lacquer half needs none of that: two coats, let it dry, done.

How do you match a duo to your dip powder?

By the code. Every shade in the six Pro books exists as a dip powder too, under the same number (the Green and Yellow Green powders are the no-activator kind, under SNS Pro No Activator), and the dip listing carries the gel and lacquer as a variant on the same page. So a salon that dips the hands and paints the toes can pull one code, say #096 in the Blue Book, and get powder, gel and lacquer that were all mixed to the same standard. One caution that applies to every color page on the internet: screens and lighting shift color. When a client is choosing, match against the physical SNS book, not the thumbnail.

• Title: the code, a color word, and the book. The color word is a plain read of the swatch, not an official name; the code is the official part.
