What is Gelous Color?

Gelous Color is our original dipping powder line and it's still the backbone of the range. Everything else we make, the seasonal drops, the Pro books, the DIY jars, came after it and around it. If a salon carries one SNS line and nothing else, it's usually this one.

Two things define it. The shades are numbered rather than named, so a reorder is a number on an order sheet and not a description of a color someone half remembers. And each shade is matched across the powder, the gel and the lacquer, so a set on the hands and a pedicure booked the same afternoon come out the same color rather than nearly.

We mill our powders fine, which is what lets the color lay flat instead of grainy, and the Nutri-Plus formulation carries vitamins and minerals in the base coat and in the powder itself.

How the numbering works

Shades run as GC numbers, from GC001 upward. The number is the shade, and it doesn't change with a season or get renamed when marketing moves on, and it is the reason a client who liked a color last spring can have that exact color again without anybody guessing.

This is the practical difference between a numbered line and a themed one. A collection called Harvest Moon is designed to be beautiful together and then it stops being made. A numbered line is designed to be reorderable. Salons carry both for different reasons, and most working stations end up with a numbered base plus a rotating shelf of whatever collection suits the season.

What you get on a listing

Most Gelous Color shades, GC370 for example, offer three things on the same page.

• Dip-Only Powder, 1oz, $15.50. The standard jar for a shade you use regularly but not daily.
• Dip-Only Powder, 1.5oz, $23.25. The salon jar, for the shades in steady rotation.
• Gel & Lacquer Duo, $15.75. The matching soak-off gel and air-dry lacquer, for pedicures and for clients who want the same color in a different service.

The powder needs no lamp, because it sets chemically through the activator like the rest of the dip range. The gel half of the duo does need a lamp, because it is a soak-off gel, and the lacquer air dries. One shade, three ways to wear it.

How is Gelous Color different from the seasonal collections?

• Permanence. Numbered shades stay orderable indefinitely, while a seasonal collection has a life and eventually stops being made.
• Selection method. You pick a Gelous shade because a client asked for that color. You pick a seasonal shade because it fits a mood or a time of year.
• Restocking. A number is unambiguous on an order form, and a name is not, especially across a catalog where several collections reach for the same handful of words.
• What sits next to what. A seasonal collection is curated to work together. A numbered line is a spectrum, so pairing two shades from it is your judgment rather than ours.

Neither is better. The whole color range, numbered and named together, sits on dip-only powder, and the seasonal collections are easiest to browse from there with the color filter.

Building a wall from a numbered line

The pattern that works in most salons is boring and effective. Carry the shades clients name unprompted, in 1.5oz. Carry the long tail in 1oz. Add the matching duos only for the shades you actually get asked to match on toes, which is usually a much shorter list than you'd expect.

Numbered lines make that easy to audit, because once a quarter you can look at what's running low and reorder straight from the number. No photographs, no scrolling a color chart, no ordering the wrong pink because two names sounded alike.

How do you apply it?

The standard dip sequence. Our full guide has it with the timings.

1. Prep. Cuticles pushed back and never cut, shape, buff, then wipe with alcohol or acetone so no oil is left on the plate.
2. Thin coat of base to three quarters of the nail, dip into Foundation powder at a 45 degree angle, tap off the excess.
3. Second coat of base to the cuticle line, dip into Foundation again.
4. Third thin coat of base, then dip into your Gelous shade, and repeat base and color once more.
5. Activator over the whole nail, four minutes, then file and buff, then a second coat of activator.
6. Two thin coats of top coat, sealing the free edge each time.

Care and removal

Dip comes off with a soak, not a pry. Picking at a lifted edge takes layers of the nail plate with it, and those layers grow back over months rather than days, so one rushed removal outlasts the manicure that caused it. Our guide on removing dip powder at home covers the soak and the timing.
