Frequently asked questions

Which file grit should I use on a natural nail?

180 or finer. Grit counts the abrasive particles per square inch, so a low number is coarse and a high number is fine: 80/80 and 80/100 are for reducing acrylic and hard gel and should never touch the natural plate, 100/180 is the everyday file with a shaping side and a refining side, and 180/180 is the one for natural nails, finishing and edges. Use a buffer only to take the shine off before base coat, not to thin the nail.

Why do you sell files in packs of 25?

Because they are consumables, not equipment. A file loses its bite well before it looks worn, and a dull file makes you press harder, which is where the heat and the damage come from. Packs of 25 make it realistic to use a fresh file on natural nails and to bin one when it stops cutting. Metal tools such as pushers and clippers are the opposite: buy once, disinfect between clients, and they last years.

What do I need to open a nail station from scratch?

Six things, in this order: prep tools (a 100/180 file, a 180/180 file, a buffer, a cuticle pusher, clippers and a dust brush); the system you are selling with its base, activator or top; a lamp if anything on the menu cures; the right brush for that system; removal supplies; and only then the add-ons such as magnets and rhinestones. Buying the add-ons first is the usual mistake, because they raise the ticket but cannot deliver the core service.

How should brushes and metal tools be cleaned?

By material. Acrylic brushes are cleaned in monomer, gel brushes with gel cleanser, and neither natural-hair type should go into acetone, which strips the hair and the ferrule glue. Metal pushers and clippers are disinfected through the salon's full process between clients, not just rinsed. Files and buffers are not cleaned at all on natural nails: use a fresh one and discard it. Replace a file as soon as it stops cutting cleanly, rather than pressing harder to make it work.

What is on this page?

The bench. Everything that is not a color or a gel: the files and buffers that shape and prep, the brushes that place the product, the pushers and clippers that get a nail ready, the dust brushes and soak-off supplies that clean up afterwards, and the small pieces that make a service possible, from cat eye magnets to rhinestone boxes to pedicure towels. SNS, Lavis, LDS and a few specialist makers sit in one grid.

It is a broad page by design, so the chips above split it into the four benches most people are actually shopping for.

Which file grit does which job?

Grit is the number of abrasive particles per square inch, so a low number is coarse and a high number is fine. Getting it wrong is the fastest way to damage a natural nail, and the most common mistake in a salon is reaching for one file all day.

GritWhat it is for
80/80The coarsest. Reducing acrylic and hard gel bulk fast, shaping an extension. Never on the natural nail.
80/100Shaping enhancements and taking length down.
100/100General shaping on enhancements.
100/180The everyday file: 100 side for shaping, 180 side for refining and for light work on the natural nail.
180/180Natural nails, finishing, edges. Fine enough not to tear the plate.
Buffer 100/180Taking the shine off before base coat, and smoothing a surface before color.

Files come in packs of 25 because they are consumables: a file used on a natural nail should be fresh, and a file that has lost its bite makes a tech press harder, which is where the heat and the damage come from.

Prep tools

  • Cuticle pusher: pushes the eponychium back so product does not sit on skin. Product on skin is the single biggest cause of lifting.
  • Nail clippers: length down before shaping, so the file is not doing work a clipper does in a second.
  • Dust brush: clears filings before the next coat. Dust trapped under base coat is a peel waiting to happen.
  • Dehydrator and base, from Dip Essentials or Base & Top Gel, depending on the system.

The full order is in our 10-step nail prep checklist, which is the single most useful thing to hand a new tech.

Why does removal damage nails more than application?

Removal is where most nail damage happens, and it is nearly always impatience rather than product. The soak-off solution and the removal bundle exist to make the patient version easy: break the seal by filing the top layer, wrap, wait, and push the softened product away in passes rather than levering at a lifted edge. An e-file from Nail Drills speeds up the bulk-reduction step, and a dust collector keeps the filings out of the air. Our guide on removing dip powder safely walks a client through it at home.

Brushes and applicators

Brushes live here and on their own page at Brushes, which sorts them by the job they do: kolinsky rounds for acrylic, short firm ovals for builder gel from a jar, flat brushes for poly gel, liners for art, fans for ombre, and soft wide brushes for dust. Also on this page: replacement brushes and caps for SNS bottles, so a worn brush does not mean a wasted bottle, silicone sculpting pens for 3D gel, and a stainless carving tool.

The small pieces that finish a service

How do you open a station from scratch?

  1. Prep: a 100/180 file, a 180/180 file, a buffer, a cuticle pusher, clippers and a dust brush.
  2. The system: whichever of dip, gel or builder you are selling, plus its base, activator or top from Dip Essentials or Base & Top Gel.
  3. Cure: a lamp from Nail Lamps if anything on the menu cures.
  4. Apply: the right brush for that system, from Brushes.
  5. Remove: soak-off solution, wraps and patience; add an e-file once volume justifies it.
  6. Add-ons last: magnets for cat eye, stones and art for upsells. These are what raise the ticket once the core service is solid.

What wears out, and how fast

A bench splits into two halves that behave completely differently. Files, buffers, replacement brush heads, wraps and towels are consumables: they are bought by the pack, used up and rebought, and trying to stretch them is what causes heat, pressure and damage. Pushers, clippers, glass holders, magnets and metal tools are equipment: bought once, disinfected between clients, and they last for years. When a station feels expensive to run, it is almost always because someone is treating a consumable as equipment, filing with a worn file or reusing a brush head that should have been swapped three clients ago.

Hygiene and replacement

  • Files and buffers are consumables. Single-use on natural nails where you can, and discard once the abrasive is worn smooth.
  • Metal tools are disinfected, not rinsed. Pushers and clippers go through the salon's full process between clients.
  • Brushes are cleaned in the right liquid: monomer for acrylic brushes, gel cleanser for gel brushes, never acetone on natural hair.
  • Dust is a health issue for the tech, not just a tidiness one. A dust brush clears the nail; a collector clears the air.
  • Restock by what runs out. Files, buffers, replacement brush heads and towels turn over fastest; the metal tools last years.

Our salon guide on safety and hygiene covers the process side.
