Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a dual form and a soft gel tip?

A dual form is a reusable mould: you fill it with poly gel or builder gel, press it onto the nail, cure, and pop the form off, so the cured gel is the extension. A soft gel tip is the extension itself, a pre-shaped full-cover tip bonded to the nail with gel. The form gives a sculpted, gel-built nail and is reused; the tip gives the fastest full set and is used once. Most salons keep both: dual forms are on this page, soft gel tips under Lavis Soft Gel Tips and LDS Soft Gel Nail Tips.

Which gel goes in a Lavis dual form?

Lavis lists poly gel, builder gel and soft gel adhesive. Poly gel is the usual choice because it stays where it is placed inside the mould and is shaped with a brush before curing; Lavis Poly Gel Non-Sticky needs no slip solution. Builder gel gives a thinner, more flexible extension, and Lavis suggests the jar version for the strongest bond. Our SNS Pro Sculpt poly gel works the same way.

How many sizes come in a box, and how do I size a form?

Fifteen sizes per single-shape box, and 15 of each shape in the five-shape kit. Choose the form that sits inside the side walls of the nail without pressing on the skin; if two sizes seem close, take the smaller one, because gel overflow at the sides is harder to clean up than a slightly narrow extension is to shape. The clear forms let you see the fit and the gel level as you fill.

Can dual forms be reused, and how do I clean them?

Yes. Lavis rates them for repeated use: wipe out residue after each client, lift any stuck cured gel with a wooden stick, and never file the inside, because a scratched mould marks the next extension. Retire a form once the cuticle edge deforms or a wall cracks; the slim edge that hugs the nail is what keeps gel off the skin, so a warped form loses the main benefit.

What is a Lavis dual form?

A reusable mould for building a nail extension. You fill the form with poly gel or builder gel, press it onto the prepped natural nail, cure, and pop the form off: the cured gel keeps the shape of the mould, so the extension comes out sized and shaped without sculpting freehand or filing a tip down. Lavis makes the forms thin and light with a slim cuticle edge that hugs the nail and limits gel overflow, a matte inner surface so the gel holds while you work, and enough strength to be cleaned and used again.

This page holds two ways to build with Lavis: the dual forms and dual form tips (fill, press, cure, release) and the Poly Gel Nail Forms 01 to 06, where the gel is shaped over the form instead of inside it. Both work with the same gels: Lavis Poly Gel Non-Sticky, Lavis Builder Gel in the Bottle, and our own SNS Pro Sculpt poly gel.

The shapes and packs on this page

Each single-shape box carries 15 sizes, so one box covers a full hand of any client. The clear forms let you see the gel level while you fill; the matte forms are the same shapes with a frosted finish.

There is also a miniature dog breed sandwich mould for novelty encapsulated art, sized like the rest.

Who books a dual form extension?

  • Clients who want length fast: the shape comes out of the mould finished, so most of the service is prep and cure, not filing.
  • Salons running poly gel: a dual form is the container that makes poly gel easy to place and shape.
  • Techs moving from tips to sculpting: a mould gives a sculpted extension without the freehand skill a paper form needs.
  • Home users: the fill, press, cure, release routine is the most forgiving way to build an extension.
  • Encapsulated art: the sandwich moulds trap glitter, foil or dried flowers inside a clear extension.

How do you build an extension in a dual form?

  1. Prep the natural nail. File, buff, dust, dehydrate. Lavis recommends a primer or protein bond for extra adhesion; ours are under Base & Top Gel.
  2. Size the form. Pick the size that sits inside the side walls without pressure; 15 sizes per box means the fit is exact rather than close.
  3. Fill. Scoop poly gel or brush builder gel into the form. The matte inner surface holds the gel where you put it. Lavis's non-sticky poly gel needs no slip solution to spread.
  4. Press and cure. Press the form onto the nail from the cuticle edge down so air escapes at the free edge, hold, and cure under a UV/LED lamp for 60 seconds (Lavis specifies a 48W or stronger lamp for its builder gel).
  5. Release and refine. Pop the form off, file the edges, buff the surface, then color and top coat as normal.
  6. Clean the form. Wipe out any residue and it is ready for the next client.

Lamps, files and dust brushes are under Nail Tools & Accessories.

Most salons keep two of the three. Dual forms and soft gel tips cover the same clients from different directions: the form for a sculpted, gel-built extension, the tip for the fastest full set.

What gel goes in the form?

Lavis lists three: its own poly gel, builder gel and soft gel adhesive. Poly gel is the natural partner, thick enough to stay put in the mould and shaped with a brush before curing. Builder gel works for a thinner, more flexible extension; Lavis suggests the jar version for the strongest bond. On our shelf that means Lavis Poly Gel Non-Sticky (36 shades, no slip solution), Lavis Builder Gel in the Bottle, our SNS Pro Sculpt poly gel, and the base, primer and top coats under Base & Top Gel.

Care, reuse and stocking the forms

  • Cleaning: wipe the inside after each use; cured gel that stuck lifts with a wooden stick. Do not file the inside; a scratched mould marks the next extension.
  • Reuse: Lavis rates the forms for repeated use. Retire a form once the cuticle edge deforms or the walls crack, because the fit is what keeps gel off the skin.
  • Storage: keep each shape in its box, sorted by size, so the next fitting takes seconds.
  • Opening a service: the five-shape kit plus one bottle of poly gel is enough to book the first clients; add single-shape boxes for the shapes that repeat.
