Frequently asked questions

Do these stickers need water or a lamp?

No. Every sticker on this page is self-adhesive: peel it from the sheet with tweezers, place it on a cured gel color, set dip or dry polish, press from the center out, and seal with top coat. The lamp only comes in to cure the top coat over a gel manicure. There are no water decals here, and the transfer foils that need a foil gel are on the Nail Foil page.

How do the Lavis stencil stickers work?

Each stencil sheet gives you a frame and the cut-out shape. Press the frame on and sponge Pat Pat Gel or mist Air Ombre powder through the opening for a shape with a crisp edge, then lift the frame while the gel is still wet and cure. Or press the cut-out shape on as a mask, sponge a soft color around it, and lift it for a silhouette inside an aura halo. Lavis lists the stencils as reusable: peel gently and return them to the backing sheet.

How do I keep a sticker from lifting at the edges?

Three habits. Peel with tweezers, not fingers, so no oil gets on the adhesive. Press from the middle outward on a nail that is fully cured and wiped, or fully dry if it is polish, so no air is trapped under the edge. Then seal the same day with two thin coats of top coat, capping the free edge, and for 5D decals work the top around the raised detail with a fine brush. If an edge lifts later, cap it with a drop of top coat rather than pulling it off.

What is the difference between 3D and 5D stickers?

Relief. A 3D sticker sheet carries small printed motifs with a slight raised surface, the everyday accent sticker for hearts, flowers, faces and bows. A 5D decal is embossed so the detail stands off the nail, a lace edge or a flower with sculpted petals, and reads like a molded piece without any sculpting. Both are self-adhesive and sealed the same way; the 5D needs the top coat brushed around its edges so the relief is not buried.

What kinds of nail stickers are these?

Self-adhesive ones. Every sticker on this page is peeled off its sheet with tweezers, placed on a cured or dry nail, pressed down and sealed under top coat; none of them needs water, foil gel or a lamp to go on. Within that, there are four different things: printed sticker sheets with dozens of small motifs, embossed decals with raised detail, pre-shaped French tip and lace stickers, and stencil stickers that are used and then removed to leave a clean shape behind. The right one depends on whether you want to place a picture, shape a tip, or mask an area.

TypeExamplesWhat you get
3D sticker sheetsMO557 to MO562, MO-519, the MO and JO seriesA sheet of small self-adhesive motifs with a little relief: hearts, bears, flowers, cherries, faces, bows, spring and holiday themes. Single use, peeled with tweezers.
5D embossed decalsSD-2249 to SD-2258, also as options on the French Lace listingStickers with raised, sculpted detail, so a flower or a lace edge stands off the nail like a molded piece without any sculpting.
Thin metallic accentsNail Art Sticker in silver, gold and whiteUltra-thin stars, hearts, sparkles and lines that lie flat under top coat; the layer for a minimalist accent.
French tip stickersOmbre French (laser silver, holographic silver, laser bronze and more), French LacePre-shaped tips: the smile line is cut for you, in metallics, holographics or a lace-fabric print.
Stencil stickersLavis Nail Sticker Stencils (plaid, oval curved, almond curved, French, hearts, stars, bows, sparkle shapes), Halloween stencilsA frame you sponge or spray through for a crisp shape, or the cut-out shape itself as a mask for an aura halo. Lavis lists them as reusable.

How do you apply a nail sticker?

  1. Finish the base. Cure the color coat and wipe the tacky layer, or let regular polish dry fully. A cream from SNS Gel Only or a HEMA-free cream from A'DOR Gel-Ons is the usual bed; on dip, finish the powder and activator and buff smooth.
  2. Peel with tweezers. Lift the sticker from the sheet by its edge. Fingers leave oil on the adhesive and it lifts later.
  3. Place, then press from the center out. Set it where you want it, press the middle, then smooth toward the edges so no air stays under it. A curved nail needs the sticker pressed in stages.
  4. Trim the overhang. A French tip sticker that runs past the free edge is filed back after the top coat, not before.
  5. Seal. Two thin coats of top coat over the whole nail, cured, capping the free edge. The 5D decals need the top coat worked around their edges with a fine brush so the raised detail is sealed but not buried. Base and top are under Base & Top Gel.

Stencils: sponge, spray or mask

The Lavis stencil stickers work two ways, and the sheet gives you both parts. The outer frame is the stencil: press it on, sponge Pat Pat Gel or mist Air Ombre powder through the opening, lift the frame, and the shape has a clean edge with no bleed. The cut-out piece is the mask: place it, sponge a soft color around it, lift it, and the shape sits inside an aura halo in the base color. Plaid frames give the check pattern in two passes at right angles; the oval and almond curved frames give a clean smile line for a French in any color. Lift a stencil while the gel is still wet and cure afterward; a stencil lifted after curing tears the edge.

Where each sticker earns its place

  • Kids and quick accents: the 3D sheets. One sheet does a party's worth of accent nails, and the motifs are sized for a single nail.
  • Bridal and lace: the French Lace stickers and the 5D decals, over a nude or milky base.
  • A French without a steady hand: the Ombre French tips in a metallic, or a curved stencil frame and the color of your choice.
  • Minimalist sets: one thin gold or silver accent sticker per nail on a sheer base, under a single coat of top.
  • Seasonal walls: Halloween stencils in October, hearts for February, spring florals from the MO and JO sheets. Our blog covers the looks: Halloween nail art, Valentine's nails.
  • Layered with other art: a sticker on a foil base from Nail Foil, a rhinestone at the center of a 5D flower, or a liner detail from LDS Line Art Gel drawn around a sticker after it is sealed.

Sticker, foil or decal?

A sticker is a motif with its own adhesive: peel, place, seal. A transfer foil is a pattern on a carrier film that only moves onto cured foil gel; it covers a whole nail with a print and needs the gel to work. Stickers are for a motif you want to place exactly; foil is for pattern across the nail. The two combine well, a sticker placed on a foiled base, and both go under the same top coat.

Stocking and care

  • Buy sheets by season and keep them flat in a folder; a curled sheet drops motifs and a sheet left in sun loses its tack.
  • One pair of fine tweezers per station, wiped with alcohol between clients. Tweezers are the whole technique for small motifs.
  • Stencils: Lavis lists them as reusable; peel them off gently, stick them back on their backing sheet, and they hold tack for several uses. Sponge with a light hand so gel does not creep under the frame.
  • Seal the same day. An unsealed sticker catches on hair and fabric within hours. Two thin top coats outlast one thick one.
  • Check the edge at the fill. If a sticker edge lifts as the nail grows, cap it with a drop of top coat rather than pulling it; pulling takes the color with it.
