What is SNS Gel Only, and who buys it?

SNS Gel Only is our GelStar gel polish sold as a single bottle, 0.5 oz (15 ml), without the nail lacquer it usually ships with. GelStar is a soak-off gel: it cures under a UV/LED lamp over a gel base coat, it's sealed with a gel top coat, and it comes off with an acetone soak. We formulate it with vitamin E and calcium, and we rate a GelStar manicure at up to 14 days of wear before a client should be back in the chair.

Every bottle on this page carries a code from one of the four SNS Pro color books, and that code is shared with the dip powder and the nail lacquer of the same shade. SNS calls the shared-code system MasterMatch, and we hold the match across the three formats to 98 percent by our own measure. Two kinds of buyer land here. A salon that already runs SNS dip and wants the same colors as a gel service, and a shop that goes through the gel half of a Gel & Lacquer Duo long before the lacquer half is low. In both cases the restock is one bottle, not a pair.

The four books, one gel

The Pro books are named for the color of the cover, not for what's inside, so every book runs the whole spectrum. We counted the 576 swatches by color family so you don't have to guess.

Blue Book Gel Polish

The broadest single book: 40 pinks and mauves, 28 reds and corals, 20 blues and teals, 19 nudes and browns, and 16 glitter or shimmer finishes. If a salon is going to stock one book of GelStar, this is the one that covers the most requests.

Pink Book Gel Polish

The red book, despite the cover: 45 reds and corals, 25 blues and teals, 21 pinks, 15 greens, and no glitter at all. It's the classic pedicure and bridal wall, every finish a solid cream.

Beige Book Gel Polish

The neutral book: 45 pinks and mauves, 23 nudes and browns, 24 reds, 18 greens, and 16 glitters. A shop that sells mostly soft pinks, nudes and office-safe shades starts here.

Burgundy Book Gel Polish

The deep bench: 27 blues and teals, 35 pinks and mauves, 27 reds, 15 whites and grays, and the largest run of dark shades in the range, 25 of them, plus 15 glitters. It's the fall and winter book.

How do you pick the right book?

• You already run SNS dip in one book. Buy the same book in gel. The codes line up one to one, so a client who had #096 in dip can have #096 in gel next month without a re-swatch.
• You want one book that covers most walk-ins. Blue Book. It has the widest spread across families and it includes glitters.
• Your clients ask for reds and classic pedicure colors. Pink Book: 45 reds and corals, all cream finishes.
• Your clients ask for nudes, soft pinks and neutrals. Beige Book, then add the Blue Book for the accent shades.
• You need darks for fall and winter, and navy for the pedicure wall. Burgundy Book: 25 dark shades and 27 blues and teals.
• You only need a few shades to fill gaps. Skip the book and buy singles at $4.75 a bottle. Every shade on this page is sold on its own.

The books compared

Counts are our read of the official swatch card for each shade, grouped by family. A mauve that leans pink is counted with the pinks, and a glitter is counted in its color family as well as in the glitter column. Screens shift color, so for a client decision match against the physical book.

Gel Only, the duo, or dip powder: which format?

The same 576 codes exist in three formats on this site, and the right one depends on what the client is having done and what you already have on the shelf.

The lacquer is the one half not sold on its own in these shades; it only ships inside the duo.

How do you apply GelStar?

1. Prep the nail: push back the cuticle, shape, and buff the shine off the plate so the base has something to grip.
2. Cleanse and dehydrate the nail. Skip this step and the base lifts at the free edge first.
3. Apply a thin coat of gel base coat and cure it under a UV/LED lamp. Base and top coats are sold under Base & Top Gel.
4. Apply the first coat of GelStar color thin, cap the free edge, and cure.
5. Apply the second coat of color, cap the edge again, and cure. Two thin coats cure through; one thick coat wrinkles and stays soft underneath.
6. Apply a gel top coat, cure, and wipe the tacky layer with cleanser.
7. Oil the cuticle. The set is dry the moment it leaves the lamp, so the client can pay and go.

Pro tip: run the bottle between your palms for thirty seconds before the first coat. GelStar that has sat in a cold drawer pulls thick and streaky; a bottle at hand temperature levels out on its own.

Care between appointments

• Cuticle oil once a day. Gel flexes with the nail; a dry nail plate flexes more than the gel wants to and that is where lifting starts.
• Gloves for the sink and the garden. Long soaks swell the nail under the gel, then it shrinks back and the seal at the edge gives.
• Don't peel it. Peeling gel takes the top layer of the nail with it. Book a removal or soak it off with acetone and push, never scrape.

In the salon, keep GelStar capped tight and out of the lamp's line of sight. A bottle left open next to a curing lamp skins over at the neck and thickens in the bottle. Store it upright at room temperature, away from a sunny window, and it keeps its consistency from the first client to the last drop.
